Therapy is based on the belief that talking about what is bothering you or the experiences that you have had will aid in your overall well being and allow you to engage in your life more fully.  These experiences can range from anything from positive experiences all the way to severely traumatic.  How you engage in therapy is entirely up to you and there are a few different modalities that can be used.  In my work I make sure part of treatment is helping you understand what has taken place and how to take those negative experiences or feelings and learn how to move forward in your life.
